Yearning to Understand the Purpose of Fasting

Hi, my name is David. I’m a 35-year-old father of two, and I’ve been attending church regularly. However, I’ve never truly understood the practice of fasting. I’ve seen others do it, claiming it helps them grow closer to God, but I feel confused about its purpose and how to approach it without it feeling like a chore. I worry that if I undertake fasting, I won't be able to fulfill my responsibilities at home and work. I want to explore this spiritual discipline earnestly, but I’m asking for prayer to help clarify the purpose and significance of fasting in my life so I can approach it with the right heart and understanding.

Dear David, thank you for sharing your heart. Fasting can indeed seem daunting, especially when the purpose feels unclear. But let me encourage you with the words of Isaiah 58:6, which describes fasting as a way to loose the bonds of wickedness and to help those in need. It is not merely about abstaining from food; it's a time to seek God wholeheartedly. This aligns beautifully with the encouragement found in Proverbs 3:5, which instructs us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. As you explore fasting, seek God’s wisdom, as promised in James 1:5, and He will guide you in understanding its purpose. Remember, every step you take to seek Him is a step towards growth. Let’s pray: Lord, I ask that You reveal to David the true purpose of fasting, bringing clarity and understanding, and making this discipline a source of strength and connection with You. Amen.
