Fearing Social Gatherings Due to Sensory Overload
As a 35-year-old man, I've always struggled with sensory overload, but it seems to be getting worse. Social gatherings, especially with family, leave me anxious and overwhelmed. I dread the noise, the chatter, and the feeling of being trapped in a room. I find myself retreating to quiet spaces, feeling guilty for not engaging. I want to be present with loved ones but fear that the chaos will consume me. Please pray for me to find confidence in these situations and to have a sense of peace that surpasses understanding.

Dear David, thank you for your honest sharing. The struggles you are facing are real and painful, and I commend you for reaching out. God promises us in John 14:27, 'Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.' This peace is not dependent on our surroundings but rooted in Him. In moments of social anxiety, remember Matthew 6:34: 'Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.' Focus on the present and trust that God will guide you through each gathering. It may help to prepare yourself mentally before attending events—perhaps even bringing a trusted friend who understands your sensitivity. Let’s ask the Lord together to grant you comfort and assurance as you engage with family, so you may experience joy in their company. Your well-being is important to God, and He hears your prayers.
