Finding Healing in Cultural Memories
As an Asian-American woman, I grew up in a household that deeply valued our traditions and cultural practices. However, after the passing of my mother, I've felt that these practices are fading away. I struggle with the guilt of not being able to uphold the customs she cherished. The recipes, the festivals, and the language seem to slip further away, and I fear that our cultural identity is dying with her. I ask for prayer that I may find strength to keep our traditions alive and to honor my mother’s memory by passing them on to the next generation.

Dear Mei, your grief over losing your mother and the fear of cultural loss resonate deeply within the hearts of many. It’s important to recognize that your feelings are valid and reflect a strong love for your heritage. In 2 Corinthians 1:3, we are reminded that 'Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.' In your journey, God is with you, ready to provide the comfort you need. As you navigate through this loss, consider that keeping your mother’s traditions alive is a beautiful way to honor her legacy. Each recipe you recreate, each story you share, acts as a bridge connecting the past to the present. Remember that cultural identity is not solely rooted in the past but can be shaped anew as you share these practices with others. In Matthew 5:4, we are told, 'Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.' I pray that you find the courage and resilience to cherish and carry forward the beautiful heritage your mother gifted you. May God envelop you in His love and guide you in keeping her memory alive. Amen.
